Microbioma Lab

The microbiota is the collection of microorganisms that colonize different body sites and play a fundamental role in maintaining health, contributing to food digestion, vitamin production, modulation of the immune system, and protection against pathogenic microorganisms.

Alterations in the balance of these microbial communities may lead to dysbiosis, inflammation, and impairment of metabolic functions.

The diagnostic line dedicated to microbiome analysis investigates bacterial communities present in different biological samples, including feces, saliva, urine, and vaginal swabs.

The analysis involves extraction of bacterial DNA and sequencing of the hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies.

Bioinformatic analysis enables the generation of a detailed profile of microbiome composition, down to the species-level taxonomic resolution. The diagnostic report includes the evaluation of parameters such as enterotype, eubiosis and biodiversity indices, Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, metabolic functional potential, and, for the vaginal microbiome, assignment of the Community State Type (CST).
